Bishop Jonathan spoke to BBC Radio Kent's Steve Ladner on Wednesday 30 November, about the place of faith and the Church in people's lives.
He was interviewed following recently released Census figures which show that less than half of the population identifies as Christian.
Asked if he was surprised by the figures, Bishop Jonathan said:
"I think that the figures before us are both a great opportunity and a great challenge to the Church. I think they are an opportunity because it means there are an awful lot of people out there who don’t know and don’t even think they know what the Christian faith is about, and that presents us with an opportunity to let them know the good news of what our faith is about."
He went on to speak about how churches are often at the heart of their communities providing amenities like warm spaces and food banks, and making a difference to those they serve.
