7th April 2019
This Passiontide Rochester Cathedral will hosting acclaimed jazz musician (and priest in the diocese) Rev’d Dr Tim Boniface and his rhythm section for a performance of Tim’s remarkable jazz suite ‘The Eight Words’, based on the eight sayings of Jesus in John’s passion narrative.

With the CD (released in 2016) garnering critical acclaim from church and jazz circles alike, the Eight Words offers a unique way to encounter the words of Jesus in John’s narrative from Gethsemane to Golgotha. In the words of Paul Northup from Greenbelt, the Eight Words is “beautifully conceived… the work of a fine composer-musician—who also happens to be ordained. And this is the uniqueness here. The work is ambitious, thoughtful and accessible, yes. But it is also deeply devotional, too, which makes the music all the more disarming and powerful”

Together with London jazz regulars Phil Merriman, Ed Babar and Jon Ormston, Tim will perform The Eight Words in the first half of a concert that will continue after an interval with other jazz music for Passiontide, including arrangements of well-known spirituals.

Many of you might remember Tim’s quartet from their stunning dinner performance at the 2018 clergy conference; Rochester Cathedral offers a striking setting for this music, and an exciting opportunity to gather around the scriptures in a new way. Please do publicise this event and encourage people to come along to what will no doubt be a superb evening.
