Racial Justice Sunday

First published on: 12th February 2021

In 2021, Racial Justice Sunday falls on Sunday 14 February.

Racial Justice Sunday is an opportunity for all Christians in Britain and Ireland to focus their worship, prayer and action on racial justice by:

  • Remembering the importance of racial justice
  • Reflecting on human diversity and thanking God for it
  • Responding by working to end injustice, racism and ignorance through prayer and action.

A wealth of resources can be found on the Churches Together in Britain and Ireland website. These can be used at any time of the year as a focus for congregations on racial justice. You can access the resources here

Last year, 2020, marked the 25th anniversary of Racial Justice Sunday (RJS) in Britain and Ireland. This significant anniversary also coincided with the tragic killing of African American, George Floyd and the re-emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement with its various protests on both sides of the Atlantic.

At the same time, the COVID-19 crisis has also highlighted the existing inequalities in our society

These events have caused much soul-searching and anxious conversations within the Church, as to how it should respond to what has taken place.

Throughout the pandemic, the CTBI has held a series of webinars to help churches discuss and explore issues around racial justice, as well as to hear and listen to people's personal experience.

These webinars can be found here

The Rev Canon Jeremy Blunden, Bishop's Adviser for BAME Affairs has written a prayer for racial justice, which can be used on Racial Justice Sunday, or at any time.

Loving God, creator of all people,
breathe in us a true sense of justice for all your children.
Give us courage to stand with victims of racism
and inspire your Church to speak truth to power, always,
as our Saviour Christ taught us.
Amen.

The Archbishops’ Anti-Racism Taskforce has also released a prayer ahead of Racial Justice Sunday, written by Anderson Jeremiah, a member of the taskforce.

Love incarnate,
Fountain of Mercy and Justice
In a world of inequity and pain
May our actions be our prayer.
We cry out for Shalom, fullness of life to all.
Let the Spirit of Truth guide us.
Let the Spirit of Love free us.
Give us the compassion, courage and resolve
to become the light, we seek
that many may see life and their dignity restored
Inspire us to embody a world without injustice and prejudice
Form us into channels of your love and peace
Let the river of justice and mercy flood our imperfect world
Quenching the thirst of parched souls and lands.
Abide in us o Liberator that we become the Word
so that the world may have Life, Life in all its abundance.
Amen
