Licensed lay Ministers

In some dioceses Readers are known as LLMs, but in Rochester the designation LLM will cover a range of roles, responsibilities and duties which will vary according to the gifts and abilities of the individual, the needs of their parish or ministry setting, and the context of their ministry.  Licensed Lay Ministry in the Diocese of Rochester will cover a broader spectrum, and different areas of ministry than currently exercised by Readers, Pastoral Assistants and Evangelists.  The selection process for licensed ministry is more rigorous, especially in the area of leadership, so new candidates for LLM gain experience in and knowledge about different expressions of ministry, with an emphasis on development of ministry leadership .

A Licensed Lay Minister will be:

  • Theologically articulate
  • A reflective practitioner
  • A leader alongside others in mission and ministry

If there are people in your parishes who might have the potential to become LLMs, the first stage is for them to attend an “It’s Your Calling” day. For details of the training and how selection works, please contact Rev Jane Winter, Facilitator for Formation, Learning and Discipleship.

The first cohort of LLMs were licensed at Pentecost 2015, and as well as fulfilling a significant leadership role in a local church or ministry setting, LLMs  are likely to contribute to ministry in a wider setting (e.g. deanery), or new context, as need arises.

‘We were delighted that Bishop Laurie Green licensed the 2018 cohort of LLM’s. He gave a very clear mandate for ministry to the LLM’s.' You can read it here.

The pattern of ministry is changing within the Church of England nationally: “The combination of changes faced by the church in the world, and by the changing shape of the church itself, is giving rise to different forms of lay and ordained ministry – and indeed to a renewed emphasis on the importance of the education of the laity”
