Churches needed to help test new scheme to support giving

First published on: 28th June 2021

The Diocese is looking for a small number of parishes to join the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) from September as part of a pre-launch to help test the scheme, and ensure a seamless roll out across the Diocese of Rochester early next year.

The initiative is being worked on jointly with the Diocese of Canterbury.

The PGS is a Direct Debit scheme which helps churches to support giving, manage regular donations, and reduce parish administration.  It is simple and secure.

The scheme has been in operation since 2008 and is currently used by more than 2,600 churches across the Church of England.

Churches which have already joined are very enthusiastic about it:

‘The Parish Giving Scheme really helps maintain cash flow, with no effort involved for Treasurers. PGS makes it easier to budget, based on committed, regular income, and is simple to set up and run. I thoroughly recommend it.’  Carolyn Allen, Stewardship Promoter, St James’, Pokesdown

What is being looked for?

A cross section of churches are being looked for to take part, and parishes will be selected on that basis. It will involve about ten people from each of the parishes signing up for six months.

Benefits for churches are:

  • automatic reclaim of Gift Aid each month;
  • reduced administration and paperwork for church treasurers;
  • an option for donors to increase gifts annually by the rate of inflation; and
  • free at the point of use for parishes.

For donors:

  • it is easy to sign up to;
  • donors have total control over their giving, and can easily change the amount; and
  • donors can choose to remain anonymous.
