Military Christian Meetings in Sevenoaks

Over 200 years ago a sergeant in the Royal Artillery, who offered Bibles to his fellow soldiers at Woolwich, was rebuked by his Commanding Officer and told that if he did not mend his ways he would get an overseas posting!  Providentially the news of this unjust treatment reached a member of the Army Board, and the story ends with Bibles being placed in military establishments. However many  who served in that day and generation were unable to read, so former soldiers who were Christians were employed by Christian officers to enter military establishments with the approval of Commanding Officers and Chaplains to read the Bible to the soldiers of that time.  Many were brought to faith in Christ, lives were changed and the work continues to this day in a more sophisticated style through the Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Scripture Readers Association (SASRA).

SASRA is sustained through the prayers and financial support of the Christian public. Local meetings take place throughout the country, one of which occurs in Sevenoaks each Summer.  This year’s event will take place at St Nicholas Church, Sevenoaks on Monday 5 June at 8pm, with refreshments available from 7.30pm. The lead speaker will be Colonel Edward Armitstead CBE, who commanded a battalion of the Coldstream Guards and served in Germany, Kenya, Hong Kong and Ulster where he was mentioned in despatches. He has also commanded the Queen’s Birthday Trooping the Colour Parade. He will be accompanied by Army Scripture Reader Steven Penny, a former Royal Marine, whose ministry is with the Household

Cavalry and Coldstream Guards at Windsor who will also speak of his experience.

The meeting is open to all members of the public; it has been encouragingly well attended in recent years and the singing has been especially memorable.
