Church schools thanked and encouraged

First published on: 2nd June 2020

As many of the Diocese's Church schools began to welcome some of their pupils back this week, Bishop Simon - who leads on Education for the Diocese -  and the Diocesan Board of Education, have written to school leaders to offer them encouragement and thanks.

In the letter, written just before term began, they say:

"Nothing in your professional training or experience could have prepared you for the adaptations you have had to make at speed, using the best calculations and pastoral care you could muster.

"The selflessness and skill that has gone into this, sustained local communities at a moment of maximum risk."

Recognising that many schools will have remained open to key workers they note:

"In offering physical schooling for children of keyworkers, you have done much to offer reassurance for families whose livelihoods have exposed them to risk, while developing online learning resources for others at home.  In many cases, you have managed this while having to care for your own families, young and old, who may be exposed in different ways.

"So, thank you.  You will be able to look back and know you stepped up and were not found wanting.  It should be a source of pride."

The letter also acknowledges the challenges of reopening:

"We hope and believe you will exercise good judgment in choosing the day of return, having planned carefully.  This knowledge will give reassurance to others.

"This is a long ball game.  For many months to come, it will not be school as we know it, calling for continuing adaptation.

"Thank God you stand before them. "
