Thirty Years a Pastoral Assistant!

George Lincoln from Edenbridge has been a Pastoral Assistant in the parish for 30 years – something which was celebrated on Easter Sunday as George was presented with a gift from the parish and a letter of thanks from Bishop James.

George’s ministry in the community began long before he was authorised as a Pastoral Assistant. Back in the 1960’s when London overspill estates were being built in Edenbridge, he visited all the new residents as they moved into the estate closest to his home, and one of the parishioners still recalls that George subsequently became a very helpful support to a family with a teenage lad who needed some positive guidance/encouragement from 'outside' his family and school.

George’s colleagues in the ministry team say George continues to be well known and much loved in the town, and is regularly seen out walking his dogs, or stopping for a chat in the High Street. He visits and supports several elderly people who can no longer attend services; helps others get to church, and is always willing to provide lifts to appointments at hospitals.  But his primary responsibility as a PA these days is at the other end of the age range where George’s special responsibility is for Baptisms, helping the Vicar with Baptism preparation, meeting the families, keeping the register, and assisting at the services.  With the help of other Baptism Visitors, he delivers anniversary cards until the children reach the age that they become eligible to join the Sunday Club.

We rightly celebrate the enthusiasm of new lay ministers but let’s not forget people like George who have served the Lord faithfully for so many years in their parishes, and continue to do so with wisdom born of experience, and radiating the love of Christ.
