Many
clergy and congregations have close relationships with church and state schools
in their parishes, coming into contact with tens of thousands of children across
the diocese. (Attendance at church schools alone is in excess of 20,000.) This
may include taking assemblies or services (sometimes with pupils worshipping
in their local church); it may also include teaching classes, or serving as
a governor or a chair of governors. Such contacts are important and very much
valued. In addition, some schools have chaplains appointed as members of staff.
Attendance for pupils at some services is compulsory but there are also voluntary
services, such as Eucharist or prayer meetings, which, while they may attract
smaller numbers, are nonetheless an important part of corporate life.
