Parishes - What is a Parish Priest?

A Church of England priest is most commonly found working in a parish as a Vicar, Rector, Priest-in-Charge or Curate where he/she may be responsible with local lay people for leading the Christian life and worship of one or more churches.

He/she prays and cares for local people, baptises them, takes weddings and funerals. He/she will teach the Christian faith and preach from the Bible. He/she gives advice and spiritual help and declares God’s forgiveness to those who seek it.

Some priests minister as chaplains in hospitals, schools, prisons and the armed forces or in Cathedrals. Most priests are paid in order to minister full-time. Some clergy are unpaid, usually combining their priestly ministry (in their “spare time”) with their day-to-day paid work in their place of employment.
