Mothers' Union - History

A short history of Mothers' Union

Mothers' Union was started in 1876 by Mary Sumner, a Vicar's wife, in the village of Old Alresford , Hants. She formed a ladies group in the parish, of all classes – rich and poor, where young mums could come and share the joys and problems of motherhood. They also prayed and read the Bible together.

We now have over 3 million members worldwide in over 60 countries. Mothers' Union has representation on the United Nations, and also influences issues such as international debt and family welfare. MU members are involved in outreach projects in prisons, hospitals, parenting courses, holidays and literacy. Our members worldwide, are united in prayer and fellowship.
