Readers are men and women of all ages in the Church of England, from all walks of life, who are called by God, theologically trained and licensed by the Church to preach, teach, lead worship and assist in pastoral, evangelistic and liturgical work.
There are over 200 licensed Readers in the Diocese of Rochester. They have all had their call to serve God tested through a process of selection, followed by a period of training in their spare time. They have been admitted to the office of a Reader and licensed to serve in a parish, or sometimes to a chaplaincy or school, by the Bishop.
In addition, in this Diocese there are around 100 who are over 70 and have the Bishop’s Permission to Officiate.
