The Deaneries
Benefices are grouped into deaneries. In the Diocese of Rochester there are 17 deaneries - 5 in the Bromley and Bexley Archdeaconry, 6 in the Rochester Archdeaconry and 6 in the Tonbridge Archdeaconry. The word “deanery” comes originally from the Latin for ten: deaneries originally comprised about ten parishes. Nowadays they are geographically-based, and may contain any number.

All beneficed and licensed clergy, full time parochial Licensed Accredited Lay Workers and members of the Diocesan and General Synod on the electoral rolls of parishes within the Deanery are members of the Deanery Synod. Lay representatives are elected by the parishes at their annual meetings.
